THE POWERS OF THE RING: TOWARD AN ENHANCED AND CORRUPTED MAN?
In addition to the gift of invisibility, the One Ring enables its wearers to enter the spirit world, unseen by most mortals, where the Ring-wraiths dwell. But these powers have another effect, subjecting the wearer to a fatal addiction: their wicked tendencies are exacerbated (Sméagol becomes a killer and Bilbo a thief), and the closer they get to the invisible world, the more they lose touch with reality, to the point of losing their humanity (as Sméagol transforms into Gollum). The ultimate risk is to join irrevocably the world of shadows, like the Nazgûl have done.
The Ringâs wearers are called, in short, to become new Saurons. To cement the desire for domination, the ringâs power also confers supernatural longevity and increased sensory acuity. This brings to mind the effects of some of the drugs and poisons with which science fiction and heroic fantasy are rife. Only a few exceptional beings, lacking any desire for power or possession, are immune to the effects of the ring and are able to resist Sauronâs influence, including Tom Bombadil and Gandalf.
Beyond the physical properties of this tangible, pure metal object, the One Ring also seems to behave like an organic being, specifically a parasite: extremely attractive in order to arouse its hostsâ interest, it seems to have a will of its own, which it uses to deploy the strategies necessary to rejoin its master. It can change hosts as often as needed, and the more pronounced the negative character traits of a host become, the more effective its corrupting actions. If necessary, the ring can also give its wearer the ability to understand other languages, as is the case when Bilbo is able to understand the language of spiders in The Hobbit. To accomplish its objectives, the ring therefore takes control of its hostâs mind via a cohesive strategy.
